5 Creative Ways To Stay Sane When Vacationing With Your Parents As A Young Adult

I’ve always been the old fashioned type of girl. I believe in soulmates and true love. Waiting until you’re married to move in or vacation together.

I’m 21 years old and I’ve been dating my boyfriend for over two years and we have yet to go on a lovely vacation just us two.

No weekend getaway. Nothing.

Yes, it’s our choice not to do so, but I also still live with my parents and I would not want to disrespect them by gallivanting around the world with my boyfriend. They don’t agree with it and neither do I. Plus, I find it more romantic travelling the world as husband and wife rather than boyfriend and girlfriend.

SO, to give and take a bit from both sides, Lucas has been coming on vacation with my family and me.

Yes, the vacations have been lovely in their own ways, but after a certain age you want to see the world for yourself.Ā I’ve been wanting to see Rome, but who do I go with? My boyfriend? That’s a no. I don’t have a credit card, I can’t rent a car. I could take trains, but I don’t feel safe doing that by myself.

So, Lucas and I wait until we’re ready to take the next step in our relationship in order to experience our first trip together. Which would be technically considered our honeymoon now that I think about it! haha Now that’s romantic!

Until then, I have learned a few tips to keep my sanity as I get older, travelling the world with my mom, dad and boyfriend. One big happy family. Enjoy!

  1. Make Friends

If you aren’t bringing a friend, making one gives you a reason to get out of the hotel or complex you’re staying at. It allows you to socialize with people your own age so you don’t feel like you’re suddenly becoming an old fart. It’s even better if you find someone who lives in the area, not visiting, because they probably know where the good restaurants and hang out spots are.

2. Bring Your Headphones

Nothing is better than tuning out when you just don’t want to hear it anymore. You’re on vacation as much as everyone else and you deserve to relax as much as everyone else.

3. Save And Bring Money

You want to be able to be as independent as you possibly can and that means bringing your own money. Let’s say you’re in the gift shop, you want to buy your own drink, or you want to go on an excursion, you should be able to provide for yourself without asking for permission or security.

4. Bring Your Sneakers

Staying sane while on vacation with your parents means being able to get away. Yes, you are technically on a “getaway,” but it’s not a getaway if what you’re trying to get away from… is with you. Get comfortable with walking and know your area well in order to get to places you want to go if they are not willing to take you.

5. Get Engaged With Your Surroundings (or get engaged in general…Lucas ;))

Find out what kind of activities are available. Get friendly with the staff from everywhere you go, even flight attendants on the airplane ride over. They know all the cool places to visit, fun activities and can hook you up with free food or items!

I hope you enjoyed my post! If you have any other tips comment below! I would LOVE to know about them ahaha Don’t forget to subscribe to receive notifications on when I post.
